Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge
Covering 14,000 acres along 34 miles of the Minnesota River the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge contains eight “units”, each with their own distinct traits. The Long Meadow Lake Unit is the most visited and covers 2400 acres. It features 11 miles of pedestrian/bike trails and a visitor center. The Black Dog Preserve covers 1400 acres and surrounds Black Dog Lake. Bloomington Ferry Unit is marsh and floodplain forest, covering 400 acres. Wilkie Unit is 2100 acres of marsh, lakes and bottomland forest. Upgrala Unit covers 2450 acres, but much of the area has not been acquired from private owners yet. It contains fields, marshes, ponds and floodplain forest. Cheska Unit covers 600 acres of similar terrain. Louisville Swamp Unit is the largest, at 2600 acres. The unit is mostly marsh, with many of the hiking/bicycling trails flooding at times, but there are also dry parts where prairie and fields are present. Finally, the 1480-acre Rapids Lake Unit is mostly undeveloped prairie and oak savanna with a touch of bottomland forest and wetland.
